چکیده

Hydrogen fluoride has been established to be an excellent tracer of molecular hydrogen in diffuse clouds. In denser environments, however, the HF abundance has been shown to be approximately two orders of magnitude lower. We present Herschel/HIFI observations of HF J = 1−0 toward two high-mass star formation sites, NGC6334 I and AFGL 2591. In NGC6334 I the HF line is seen in absorption in foreground clouds and the source itself, while in AFGL 2591 HF is partially in emission. We find an HF abundance with respect to H2 of 1.5 ·10 in the diffuse foreground clouds, whereas in the denser parts of NGC6334 I, we derive a lower limit on the HF abundance of 5 · 10. Lower HF abundances in dense clouds are most likely caused by freeze out of HF molecules onto dust grains in highdensity gas. In AFGL 2591, the view of the hot core is obstructed by absorption in the massive outflow, in which HF is also very abundant (3.6 · 10) due to the desorption by sputtering. These observations provide further evidence that the chemistry of interstellar fluorine is controlled by freeze out onto gas grains. Subject headings: stars:formation — ISM: molecules

Primordial Star Forming Regions in a CDM Universe

We developed a three–dimensional 2–level hierarchical cosmological code with a realistic and robust treatment of multi–species non–equilibrium ionization and radiative cooling processes, and use it to investigate primordial star forming regions that originate from high–σ perturbations in a standard CDM dominated cosmology. We find it is possible to produce gravitationally bound and cooled struc...

To appear in the Astrophysical Journal Letters NEAR-INFRARED CIRCULAR POLARIZATION SURVEY IN STAR-FORMING REGIONS: CORRELATIONS AND TRENDS

We have conducted a systematic near-infrared circular polarization (CP) survey in star-forming regions, covering high-mass, intermediate-mass, and low-mass young stellar objects. All the observations were made using the SIRPOL imaging polarimeter on the Infrared Survey Facility 1.4 m telescope at the South African Astronomical Observatory. We present the polarization properties of ten sub-regio...

6 Massive Quiescent Cores in Orion . – II . Core Mass Function

We have surveyed submillimeter continuum emission from relatively quiescent regions in the Orion molecular cloud to determine how the core mass function in a high mass star forming region compares to the stellar initial mass function. Such studies are important for understanding the evolution of cores to stars, and for comparison to formation processes in high and low mass star forming regions....

Mass Star Formation II : The Mass Function of Submillimeter Clumps in M 17

We have mapped a ∼ 5.5×5.5 pc portion of the M17 massive star-forming region in both 850 and 450 μm dust continuum emission using the Submillimeter Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). The maps reveal more than 100 dusty clumps with deconvolved linear sizes of ∼0.05–0.2 pc and masses of ∼0.8–120 M⊙, most of which are not associated with known mid-infr...

Subarcsecond Imaging of the High-mass Star Forming Region Onsala

We report subarcsecond images of the high-mass star forming region Onsala 1 (ON 1) made with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) at 0.85 mm and the Very Large Array at 1.3 cm and 3.6 cm. ON 1 is one of the smallest ultracompact H II regions in the Galaxy and exhibits various star formation signposts. With our VLA and SMA observations, two new cm-wave sources and five sub-mm dust sources, respectively...
